Man shot to death in Pointe Claire
No suspects. Victim, 39, arrested in 2000 during drug-smuggling bust

Published: Friday, July 06
The man shot dead yesterday in Pointe Claire had been arrested three times by Montreal police.
But police are giving little other information about Hasan Eroglu, 39, who was found lying face-up in the backyard of a home on Lakeshore Rd. near Lakebreeze Ave., about 8 a.m.
The woman who found him there called 911, Montreal police Constable Raphael Bergeron said.
Eroglu has a criminal record. In January 2000, he was arrested with four other people when Montreal police dismantled a heroin-smuggling ring.
Eroglu was shot at least once in the upper body. A gun was found near the body.
Police were waiting for autopsy results to determine at what time he died.
Two distraught men were escorted out of the home by police about 10:30 a.m.
One of them, an elderly man, muttered in a language other than English or French.
The other, a middle-aged man, cried and said: "We don't know what happened" when questioned by a reporter.
Police drove them away in an unmarked car for questioning. They are not considered suspects, Bergeron said.
Television reports said Eroglu had been shot three times and that a silencer had been found on the scene. The reports also said it appeared to be a gang-related hit.
Montreal police Constable Lynne Labelle said she could not confirm that information.
The home where the victim was found, which, according to municipal tax records, is registered to Marc Bulent Ipek, often had late-night comings and goings of cars, said a female neighbour, who did not want to be identified.
Police could not confirm that the victim lived in the home or whether he was related to the other residents.
They did not have any suspects or know what the motive for the murder might have been.
The house is just a block from Highway 20, with quick access to downtown.
In daytime, the residents, including one who looked like the victim, were often seen washing their cars, which include a Hummer and a Mercedes, the neighbour said.
"I was afraid for the safety of my children (because of that house). So in a way I'm relieved something has happened," she said, explaining she hoped things at the home would change as a result.
The neighbour said she woke up about 3 a.m. because she heard people arguing outside the house where the body was later found.
"I usually sleep like a log," she said.
"But I woke up and heard a man speaking very loudly (in English) with a heavy accent. My window was open. My husband and I looked around because we thought there might be a robbery going on.
"But we saw that our cars were there and we went back to sleep." They did not hear gunfire.
Monique Dion, 65, who lives in an apartment building on Lakeshore, said the home where the victim was found had only a few occupants - all male - and no children.
"I walked by it one night last week and there was one light on upstairs. I could see there was nothing on the walls, no decor at all. It was odd.
"It's very sad," Dion said of the homicide.
"You think you're safe in a neighbourhood. I'll be a little more reticent now." The death was Montreal Island's 18th homicide this year. At a corresponding time last year, there had been 20 homicides.
